Three-year-old Demarco tugs at the sleeves of his sweater and blinks in the bright light of the Head Start room. Demarco came to Head Start with a diagnosed disability; severe developmental delays.
Brighter Days Ahead
We Need The Community's Help.
Due to the recent state budget cuts Mom lost her job at a local social service agency. Ever since his Mom lost her job, the electricity had been shut off. "We're pretending we're pioneers," she says. Together they rush to get everything done before dark - but it is hard to live with no lights or heat (apartment had electric heat).
Demarco had his vision and hearing screening and had failed the vision screening twice. He was also having some behavior problems in the classroom, especially at clean-up time. Demarco loved to play with puzzles every day and would throw the puzzle pieces across the room at clean-up time.
Mom's Family Resource Advocate assisted her with getting the electricity turned back on even though the state energy assistance program's budget had been cut also. Electricity cannot be disconnected while there is a young child in the home during the winter time.
The Health Manager visited the classroom to observe Demarco, on the third visit she asked Mom to visit the classroom also. After discussing Demarco's failed vision screenings the Health Manager learned that Mom had suffered from cataracts as a child. Demarco was then referred to University of Iowa's Ophthalmology Department, received surgery for his cataracts and received glasses.
Demarco's eyes began to adjust to the lights when he returned to the classroom. He sees his favorite puzzle! And other kids! A smile starts to form. Demarco's behavior problems had disappeared at clean-up time
Heartland Head Start is brightening the lives of Demarco and his mom.
